Abstract

The article discusses the importance of etymology in understanding foreign terms found in the Qur'an, focusing on studying the origins of words and their linguistic and cultural history. It highlights how this understanding influences the accurate interpretation and translation of Qur'anic texts into other languages. The article showcases the efforts of Dr. Taqi al-Din al-Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan in translating the meanings of the Qur'an into English, adopting a methodology that combines lexical translation with contextual interpretation. Selected examples from their translation are analyzed, illustrating how they handled foreign terms like "Iblis," "Sijjil," and "Istabraq," using marginal notes based on reliable traditional sources. The article emphasizes that understanding and tracing the origins of foreign terms in the Qur'an contribute to providing accurate translations that reflect the original meanings of the Qur'anic text while preserving its doctrinal and cultural connotations. It also notes that this etymological approach in translation enhances the nonArabic reader's comprehension of Qur'anic texts and reduces the likelihood of misunderstanding or misinterpretation.
