Dénomination, minoration et effort de grammatisation lexicographique des langues d’Algérie.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper aims to study the process of linguistic minimization of Algeria’s languages during the colonial period. The analysis of the names of the different languages in a corpus of twenty-eight bilingual dictionaries made during the first century of colonization highlights the mechanisms of linguistic minimization established between a dominant exogenous language, the French language, and the endogenous languages of Algeria. The study of the titles of different collections as well as the discourse analysis contained in the prefaces and similar sources give an insightful approach, which reveals the denomination issues directly related to the ideology and politics of the time. What names do we use to describe Arabic, Berber and French mapped in these dictionaries? What ideological assumptions underline the application of a particular label to a particular language? What are the effects, conscious or not, of this ideology on local languages?

Résumé : Cette contribution a pour objectif d’étudier le processus de minoration linguistique des langues d’Algérie pendant la période coloniale. L’analyse de la dénomination des langues dans un corpus de vingt-huit dictionnaires bilingues confectionnés durant le premier siècle de la colonisation permet de mettre en évidence les mécanismes de minoration linguistique qui se sont instaurés entre une langue exogène dominante, le français, et les langues endogènes d’Algérie. L’étude des titres des différents recueils et l’analyse des discours contenus dans les préfaces et assimilés constituent une approche fort révélatrice des enjeux de la dénomination en lien direct avec l’idéologie et la politique de l’époque. Quelles appellations emploie-t-on pour désigner l’arabe, le berbère et le français mis en correspondance dans ces dictionnaires ? Quels présupposés idéologiques sous-tendent l’application de telle ou telle étiquette à telle ou telle ue ? Quels effets, conscients ou non, cette idéologie a produit sur les langues locales ?
