Abstract
This research explores the cross-cultural transfer of linguistic theories, a phenomenon Edward Said describes as the “travel of theories” from one intellectual and civilizational context to another. It focuses on the interaction between the Arab linguistic sphere and the Western linguistic sphere during the emergence of textual linguistics, highlighting the cultural, intellectual, and methodological factors that shape this exchange.
Two main reactions are observed among Arab linguists: a conservative group rejects Western contributions, viewing them as intrusive and threatening the sanctity of the Arabic language, influenced by the colonial past. Another group sees these contributions as opportunities for progress, enriching Arabic linguistics by separating language from grammar and expanding research perspectives.
The study also identifies ongoing challenges in the Arab world, such as the lack of critical and terminological works in textual linguistics, while emphasizing its practical applications in teaching, translation, and text analysis, including the Quran, recognized as an exemplary model of textual cohesion.
Textual linguistics thus offers new opportunities for advancing linguistic research and modernizing language education in the Arab world.
