Abstract

This research examines the relationship between educational programs and citizenship education, introducing the concept of citizenship to learners and analyzing practices that foster its development. The study aims to promote personal, social, and national reconciliation, strengthening learners’ sense of belonging to their community and nation. It addresses pressing issues in Algerian schools, including violence, drug use, declining moral values, disrespect for public institutions, colonial cultural influence, and illegal immigration, highlighting the need for citizenship education. The research hypothesizes that the lack of nationally oriented texts in curricula and textbooks contributes to a weakened sense of belonging, as students require literary content that reflects social change, their aspirations, and commitment to the country. The study is organized into six chapters: four theoretical chapters exploring the concept of citizenship and its educational implications, one applied chapter examining citizenship in the Algerian curriculum, and a field chapter assessing the sense of citizenship among teachers and students in primary and secondary schools, concluding with recommendations and an evaluation of the state of citizenship in Algerian education.
