Abstract

Abstract : Written after several enchanting stays in Japan, The Empire of Signsis presented as a work of fiction. Roland Barthes imagines a counter-model to the Western world, an ethical ideal far from the arrogance of the present time. How then to explain that the book has often aroused criticism from Japan specialists? This article aims to show how Barthes' writing is largely responsible for the misunderstandings of reception, playing on both the demand for truth and the joys of fiction.

Résumé : Écrit après plusieurs séjours enchanteurs au Japon, L’Empire des signes se présente d’emblée comme un ouvrage de fiction. Roland Barthes imagine un contre-modèle au monde occidental, un idéal éthique loin de l’arrogance du temps présent. Comment alors expliquer que le livre ait souvent suscité la critique des japonisants ? Cet article se propose de montrer comment l’écriture de Barthes est largement responsable des malentendus de la réception, jouant à la fois de la demande de vérité et des bonheurs de la fiction.
