Abstract

This research, entitled The Conflict between the Reformist Movement and the Sufi Orders and the Position of the Colonial Administration in Algeria (1931–1954), examines the ideological and religious struggle that emerged in Algeria during the French colonial period between two major Islamic currents. The first current is the Reformist Movement, represented by the Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars, established by a group of reformist scholars influenced by Salafi revivalist thought and shaped by their intellectual formation in the Hijaz and at Al-Azhar. The second current consists of the Sufi orders (Turuq), which had long dominated religious life in Algeria prior to the rise of reformist scholars. The study seeks to analyze the underlying causes and manifestations of the conflict between these two movements, while also examining the position of the French colonial administration toward this ideological struggle. Unlike previous studies that focused primarily on describing the relationship between the two parties or listing the causes of disagreement, this research provides a deeper analytical approach, highlighting both the dynamics of confrontation and the colonial authority’s stance. The findings indicate that the conflict did not yield positive outcomes for either side. Instead, it contributed to further divisions within Algerian society and weakened religious unity. Although both movements belonged to the broader Islamic intellectual tradition, their differences in interpretation, reference frameworks, and reform strategies intensified tensions during a critical period of national struggle.
